2021 Spring Break Camp
THE BASICS OF DRAWING (7 YEARS & OLDER)
Everything starts with drawing! Drawing is all about looking, making a mark and learning how to refine that mark to express what you see or feel. Using Aliki’s 7-Step system, students gain an understanding of drawing fundamentals while exploring 1 or 2 media (e.g., markers, oil pastel, tempera paint, + pencil.) During the week, student artists practice different styles of drawing from realistic to abstract. This summer art camp is geared to children and youth who are beginning their artistic journey, as well as drawing enthusiasts without prior formal drawing instruction.
Your child will be drawing independently with confidence after 1 hour of instruction! Student artists will learn to see how an artist sees, and practice tips and tricks for drawing realistically like a pro. They will learn to let go of perfectionism and turn their “mistakes” into abstract inspirations and new discoveries.
Camp projects are tailored 1 or 2 materials to allow for greater exploration and specialization with oil pastels & graphite pencils. All students receive their own supply kit to use during the camp and take home afterward.
Dates: Monday to Friday, Mar 29 – April 2
Times: 9 am to noon
Camp + Materials Fee: $262.50; New Student Registration Fee: $26.25
BEYOND THE BASICS OF DRAWING (8 YEARS & OLDER)
Take your drawings to the next level. Beyond the Basics of Drawing camp is designed to give students more practice with shading plus learning how to create a 3-D look in colour. Learn new vocabulary and new techniques to help you refine your drawing skills with fun and challenging art projects. Projects reinforce the foundational independent drawing skills previously learned in the Basics of Drawing Camp with lots of room for creative expression. Students learn to take risks and try new ideas. Projects range from realistic, tonal drawings to nonrepresentational drawings.
Camp projects are tailored specific media to allow for greater exploration and specialization with watercolour pencils & graphite pencils.
Pre-Requisite: This camp is best suited for students who have a good understanding of the basic techniques and terminology (i.e., Basics of Drawing summer camp or one year of Aliki’s weekly classes.) Students with past drawing experience and new to Aliki’s Art House are encouraged to call (403-667-7020) or email (email@example.com) to request a new student assessment appointment.
Please note this camp is available in person at the studio, as well as online. Parent support is beneficial during online classes for younger children (8 – 9 years old.) Please indicate your preferred format at the time of registration. Please feel to call for more information.
3-D DRAWING FOR ARTISTS IN TRAINING
(9 YEARS & OLDER)
Take your drawing skills to the 3rd dimension by adding volume! This camp is all about seeing hi-lights and shadows, and capturing those values in your drawing. It is designed to grow artistic confidence by teaching value scales, the anatomy of a shadow, and how to create tone with lines. Student artists will learn to see how an artist sees, and practice tips and tricks for drawing realistically like a pro with confidence in no time!
Camp projects are tailored specific materials to allow for greater exploration and specialization with graphite pencils.
Please note this camp is available in person at the studio only. Please feel to call for more information.
LEARN TO DRAW: JUST FOR TEENS (12 YEARS & OLDER)
This drawing camp starts at the very beginning with basic lines and shapes, and ends with capturing light and shadow to render 3-D images. Perfect for even the most intimidated teen who believes he/she can’t draw. Students will learn to see how an artist sees, and practice tips and tricks for drawing realistically like a “pro” in no time! Teens gain confidence in their own drawing abilities and begin to use drawing in their daily life. Research has shown that students who study the arts, in general, develop 10 important skills for success in everyday life such as creativity, confidence, problem-solving skills, perseverance, focus, non-verbal communication, resiliency, collaboration skills, dedication and accountability (Phillips, 2010). All projects are pencil sketches.
No drawing experience is necessary. This camp class is designed for teens (in junior and senior high school) who have no prior drawing instruction, as well as those who enjoy drawing and wish to improve their technique.
Please note this camp is available in person at the studio, as well as online. Please indicate your preferred format at the time of registration. Please feel to call for more information.
ADVANCED DRAWING & COMPOSITION: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES (9 YEARS & OLDER)
During this week-long camp, students will advance their skills in sophisticated tonal drawings, explore colour theory and abstract compositions. There is a good balance of drawing from life and the use of visuals. Perfect for those students who are not available to participate in weekly classes during the school year. Ideal for teens with past drawing instruction who want to hone their skills while continuing to develop their own creative style.
Pre-Requisite: This camp is best suited for students who have a strong knowledge base of the technique and terminology (such as 2 summer art camps or have taken one year of Aliki’s weekly classes.) In some cases, this is not necessary. Please call to inquire or to request a new student assessment.
