Sculpting Hands Building 3D Art from Raw Materials (Homeschool)

Get ready to take your artwork off the page into space!

In this 5-class session, students will be introduced to the process of sculpting as a means of extending their drawing skills to new art disciplines. Students complete two unique projects inspired by classical and modern artists. In this session, the projects will include:

Armature
An armature is the internal support structure of a sculpture. Often made from wire, wood, or metal, it acts like the skeleton, providing stability and helping the artist build and shape the form.

Relief Sculpture
A relief sculpture is a type of sculpture that is attached to and projects from a flat background surface rather than standing freely in space. The design rises out from the surface, creating depth, shadows, and texture while remaining connected to the base.

Inspiration
In this course, students will create armatures inspired by the expressive figures of Alberto Giacometti, including Circle of Man displayed at the Calgary Board of Education. Students will have  a choice of pattern for their relief sculpture. Students will explore structure, proportion, and texture as they develop their own sculptural work. All sculptures are built from raw materials using the same techniques and methodology as professional artists.
